Paths towards an educating city

4. Health, illness, well being

Prevention and safeguarding well-being through individual and collective responsibility

Health is seen as the assumption of personal and collective responsibility for well-being founded on opportunities and choices that require information, training and correct educational processes that are open to continual comparison. Health is the result of individual behavior and of the global organization of the city. In this sense, the promotion and safeguarding of health is fundamental for an educating city, as a tool for helping people, the community and the city. Health promotion must therefore be a recognizable theme in other fields of activity as well. Health is healthy transportation, appropriate school and work environments, social sports, good etiquette, etc. Health as a subject of the educating city is therefore the result of a complex relational system where interaction and communication between different elements are encouraged and promoted: individuals, health associations, social networks, medical science and other cultures of health and illness.

Apart from active promotion of health, culture and prevention at every level (individual, family and social) the Educating City's task is to prevent social exclusion or alienation as a result of illness or poor health. The objectives of social cohesion and prevention of weakening of entire categories of subjects become, in themselves, factors of prevention and promotion in the field of health.
